Sammendrag
The present publication is the first part of a monograph on the Sulitjelma district, containing the sections on physiography, general geology and petrology. In the second part the ore dposits will be described and their origin discussed. The sedimentary rocks of the Sulitjelma area belong to the upper part of the sedimentary series of the Scandinavian mountain range. The lowermost strata in the area are the Fauske limestone in the west and the Pieski limestone in the east. These Holmquist has assumed to be of the same age, an assumption that is confirmed by Rekstad. The series is undoubtedly of \"Cambro-Silurian\" age. Below this leading horizon of limestone there is in the east a great series of mica schists etc. (\"Sevegruppen\") which has been considered pre-Cambrian while a number of Swedish geologists and the writer consider it \"Cambro-Silurian\". Above the limestone horizon lie in great syncline a thick series of more or less metamorphic schists, containing some minor layers of dolomite, limestone and quartzite. This series corresponds to Sj\u00CEgren's section 1-12, and may be divided into three main divisions. 1) Lowermost are sediments the metamorphic habits of which are very different in east and west. In the east there is a faintly metamorphic chlorite- muscovite schist (Sj\u00CEgren's \"klorit-granulit\", horizon 10-12)
