Abstract
In 1916 V.M. Goldschmidt published a well-known paper dealing with the conglomerates of the so-called \"Valdres Sparagmite\", a sedimentary series of mostly arkosic character which over large areas of the central part of southern Norway is known to lie above the folded phyllites of Cambro-Silurian (mostly Ordovician) age, and therefore considered younger than these rocks. One conglomerate type is made up of gabbro material and is of special interest because it locally, in a higher deformed state, lies below thrust gabbro rocks. Another type of conglomerate is the \"quartz-conglomerate\" which has a much wider distribution and in the Grønsennknipa mountain is found in contact with granitic rocks of the \"thrust complex\". Goldschmidt, after having made personal studies in the field, assisted by Mimi Johnson (Høst), published (l.c. pp. 36-37) a series of sections across the eastern slope of the mountain, showing how, to the south, conglomerate interbedded with arkose (sparagmite) rests with a northeast dip of about 50 degrees on a basement of granite, while to the north the plane of contact becomes gradually steeper, finally being inverted. Goldschmidt considers the probable explanation to be that conglomerate etc. has been deposited on and in front of the eastward sloping surface of the granite mass during the forward movement of the latter.
