dc.description.abstract | Observed glacial striae showing direction of ice-movement during the last active stage of the inland-ice are shown in fig. 1. Supposed major directions of ice movement are also shown in fig. 3. In the mountain parts are found a great number of channels connected with the downmelting of the ice. As these meltwater-channels occur close to the highest summits, the latter must have been sityated below the firn-line when they emerged as nunataks above the ice surface. The dead ice mass was wasted by vertical thinning out, the faintly inclined ice tongues gradually retreating from the mountain sides. The orientation and position of the drainage channels have been used in determining the inclination of the ice surface. From the last active stage of the inland ics, shown by glacial striae, the culmination area moved 20-40 km southwards during the stagnant stage. | |
