Abstract

The transport and deposition of gravel by glaciers and byglacier-fed streams during the deglaciation, have been principallyresponsible for the types of Quaternary deposits found in our country.This process is described in the first part of the present publication.Outside the area which is touched upon in the special Quaternarygeological maps, reference is made in the present publications secondsection to what is to be found of observations in the older literatureregarding Quaternary geology in the region between the catchment areaof the Skien river and Setesdalen, as well as descriptions of theQuaternary deposits of Hardangervidda. It is evident from theinformation which is available that in areas lying higher than themarine limit almost all the sorted sand and gravel lies in the valleys.Below the marine limit lie marginal terraces and outwashed plainscontaining large sand and gravel deposits. The grain size of thematerial decreases towards their bases where it shows transition tofine sand, at times to clays. The last section in the presentpublication is classification of sand and gravel deposits based on thedeposit's origin.
