Abstract

Forkortet: The Norwegian valleys filled up at a large extent by gravel, sand and clay in the course of time been submitted to earthslips and sinking of the grounds, however more especially those of Gauldalen, Stjørdalen and Verdalen. The last important earthslip took place at Verdalen in 1893 whereby 111 per- sons perished. As consequence thereof it was brought forward the proposition of a systematically effected investigation of the grounds by earthborings, in order to ascertain the reason of these in their consequences so dreadful events. And the parliament was immediately willing to vote the necessary means. The investigations started in Stjørdalen (p.6-14) where an earth-slip of less importance took place just after the earth-slip of Verdalen, yet without greater consequences. Here no lifes were lost. The intension was here as well as through the later earth-borings and investigations of the grounds to as- certain or as far as possible to clear up whether and how far the earth-slip, that had taken place could be supposed to get a still further extent and whether similar earth-slip or sinking of the grounds were likely to be feared in the tracts, where the same reasons for similar catastrophes could be supposed to be at hand.
