A shallow alluvial aquifer in Esebotn, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway has been investigated from a hydrological standpoint in order to obtain estimates of groundwater transit times. Water levels, oxygen isotopes, water temperatures and precipitation were monitored over a one-year period. Groundwater transit times were calculated applying a traditional Darcyan approach and by using oxygen isotopes and temperaturee as tracers. All methods give transit times of 60-90 days. The oxygen isotopes indicate that groundwater recharge due to infil tration from the river Ygleelvi makes up about 80% of the total groundwater recharge in the central parts of the aquifer during the summer season.
