Preliminary tests have been gone through with: 1. Arcfurnaces. 2. Resistance- furnaces. 3. Inductionfurnaces. 4. Electrically heated crucibles. The last type was chosen for tests on a technical scale, two 200 lbs. furnaces of this type from Morgan Crucible Company Ltd., Battersea, London, were installed in the brass foundary, where they during one year have been doing all the melting. The reasons for the choice were principally: a) Low melting loss, about 1% for gunmetal. b) Good efficiency, a little above 50% for a small sized 200 lbs. furnace. c) Perfect control of temperature. d) Simplicity in manipulation. e) Simplicity in design and maintainance. The Morgan furnace is described and shown in illustrations. Energy-consumptions from tests under working conditions are given, and energy cost under various assumptions.
