The research work by various authors on the influence of copper in iron and steal is given in a condensed form. On pages 1-2 is explained why earlier researches often disagree owing to want to exact knowledge of the true nature of alloys and their behaviour. It appears to be proved that copper only forms a regular alloy with steel when the percentage of copper is low. The influence of the copper may be divided into three principal classes. 1. A copper content of a few tenths of one percent acts very beneficially on the resistance against corrosion, and improves the mechanical qualities. 2. If the copper content is raised to 2 or 3%, the mechanical qualities are improved much in the same way as by nickel. The resistance against corrosion decreases gradually. 3. If the copper content is raised still higher, both the mechanical and the chemical qualities are deteriorated. Exact data as to the economical side of the problem are not given, but the latter should be investigated, especially with regard to the cost of production on a large scale.
