Abstract

In this publication are given the results of a series of special investigations regarding Norwegian clays that were carried out by the State Raw Materials Commitee in the autumn of 1922 and spring of 1923. Pages 6-11 deal with the definition and determination of what we have named the maximum limit of saturation of clays with water. This limit gives a good ide of the degree of fineness of the clay concerned, and by determining the maximum limit of saturation with water we also obtain a generel conception as to the condition of the various clays when they are saturated with water. It is also stated on these pages how we have chosen to classify clays with regard to the index figure of saturation. In Table I are given the maximum limits of saturation for a number of Norwegian clays that were investigated. It will also appear from table that the maximum limit of saturation of clays varies considerably for the various kinds of clay. A a general rule it may be said that a fat clay has a high figure of saturation whilst a meagre clay has a low figure of saturation. Pages 11-12. It is here stated how clays behave when exposed to pressure. The graphic representation in Plate I shos the stress to which a clay can be exposed before it flows, and how this stress limit is dependent upon the amount of water in the clay.
