This paper presents some of the results from the geological mapping of \"Øvre Rendal\". The field work was carried out in the course of 14 weeks, divided on three summers: 1939-1941. Deserving special mentioning for work in this area is A.E. T\u00CErnbohm, who in 1896 introduced his theory on the great overthrust in the Caledonian mountain range and its marginal borders. His ideas, however, were not generally followed by the Norwegian geologists. This paper concludes with the suggestion that the light sparagmite, which covers most of the area, is thrust over from NW. It is therefore necessary to assume that the whole sparagmite formation is allochthonous. Within the map the pre-Cambrian occupies two small areas which belong to two larger \"windows\" in the sparagmite cover; the \"Finstad window\", which continues to the north, and the \"Atnesjø window\", which continues to the west and southwest. The first is very complexly built; it consists of granite and augen-granite with undigested rests of older gabbroic rocks, penetrated by coarsely crystalline dolerite dykes in the eastern part. The rocks have been exposed to metamorphism. Along the eastern margin they are highly pressed by sparagmitic rocks which were thrust along the pre-Cambiran, and thus caused a chiefly mechanical metamorphism of the pre-Cambrian.
