dc.description.abstract | The greater parts of the area is mountainous, but two deeper valleys are incised in the land mass. The valley of Øystre Slidre cuts the area almost diagonally, the valley of Vestre Slidre lies to the southwest of this. The valley sides are forested and for a great part cultivated and inhabited. Pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed in two inliers, one in each of the two great valleys of the area. Normal gabbros with essentially fresh minerals have been found in the southernmost strip of the southern area. In the northern area saussurite-uralite gabbro with massive texture has a considerable distribution, here a pyroxenitic rock has also been found. Quartz diorites also occur. The gabbroid and dioritic rocks have partly been sheared and recrystallized to amphibolites, predominantly epidote amphibolites. In some parts of the area the amphibolites are banded: light bands with quartz and plagioclase alternate with dark bands rich in amphibole, large red garnets are also found in such rocks. | |
