In 1959 an elk-horn was found in a bog in Høydalsmo, Lårdal, Telemark, about 580 m above sea level. The finder, Gunnar Aalandslid, collected samples for pollen analysis from the bog profile, from the surface down to the elk-horn level. The samples have been analysed, and an attempt has been made to correlate this very short and incomplete pollen diagram with the general climatic development of Southern Norway. At about 80 cm below the surface the more exacting tree species decline or disappear completely. This horizon probably corresponds to the deterioration in climate about half a thousand years B.C. Spruce pollen is found in a quantity only in the uppermost horizon (20 cm). Further down are found very small values, prpbably due to long-distance transport. This means that spurce migrated to Høydalsmo considerably later than to the Oslofjord region. Cultivation indicators, here Cerealia, are found in the two uppermost samples, where, furthermore, non-arboreal pollen increases at the expense of the arboreal pollen. This is obviously a result of the beginning of agriculture in the vicinity of the bog.
