Abstract

As older geological maps mainly present bedrock geology to the neglect of drift, the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) year 1936 realized the need of a special map to supply necessary information about quaternary deposits. According to Government orders investigations to produce a general geological map of glacial and postglacial deposits that year started. The base map preferred was a new one on a scale 1:250 000 issued by the Norwegian Geographical Survey, which provides a desirable topographical underlay for geological investigations. The results of surveying are up to present 6 sheets of the mentioned base map presenting different quaternary deposits distinguished by origin and drawn in colours, in all covering ca. 1\/3 of Norway south of Trondheimsfjord. Each sheet, supplied by an explaining text and summary in english, is published by NGU so as: Oslo, NGU's publication no 176, issued 1951, Oppland NGU no. 187, 1954, Hallingdal NGU no. 190, 1955, Røros NGU no. 198, 1956, Ljørdalen, NGU no. 206, 1958 and Østerdalen, NGU no. 209, 1960. The quaternary deposits within the explored part of the country admit a plain grouping of the drift.
