Abstract

The traditional study of glacial transport has recently been resumed by the Geological Survey of Norway. Two areas of particular interest have been selected for a comparative study, one around Røros in the East and the other around Hjerkinn in the West. A few preliminary results are presented here to throw some light upon the problem of the position of the various ice-divides and the corresponding glaciological conditions of the ice cap toward the end of its life span. Within the eastern area the direction of the latest glacial flow was toward NW, independent of local topography. This indicates that the ice cover was fairly at the time when the ice became dead. The ice-divide at that time was situated near the southern part of lake Femunden, and it was probably linear with a NE-SW extension. Within the western area the ice was active longer than in the East, probably due to the much higher altitude of the mountain area of Jotunheimen, and due to the higher snow precipitation in the West. An active glaciation centre, located roughly in western Jotunheimen, became dominant toward the end of the ice age.
