Kongsberg Silver Mines were worked practically continously from 1623 to 1955. After the Silver Mines were closed down in 1955, all the literature, including the old records and maps, were distributed amongst various institutions - the Geological Survey of Norway, Trondheim, the National Archives and the University Library in Oslo. The history of the mining can be divided into periods of time which correspond to improvements in technical efficiency, expansion of operations and accompanying increased understanding of the silver deposits. 1623-1685: During this period it was not possible to follow the silver-bearing veins deeper than about 50-60 metres (max 140 m.). 1685-1805: A high technical level was developed and maintained during this period. It became technically possible to sink shafts to quite considerable depths. 1805-1815: No organised work was carried out in this period. 1815-1955: During this period the Silver Mines were worked with, for the period concerned, up to date technical mathods and equipment, and rich vein-systems were found as the adits reached the areas of the old mines at depths which had previously been unattainable. The mines were not economical when they were abandoned.
