The present paper is a result of investigations carried out in the most northern district of Norway, during the summers 1914-17, the total amount of time spent in Finnmark being 23 weeks. The studies have been confined to the solid rocks, the quaternary geology has, generally, not been considered. The rocks of the vast district to the south are of Pre-Cambrian age. The studies here have been made only near the boundary line towards the younger sedimentary beds. Generally the rocks are highly metamorphic; the most common ones in this SW-NE belt are hornblendeschists, coarse amphibolites (representing metamorphosed basic igneous rocks), furthermore quartzites, generally rich mica, often also in carbonates. Also crystalline, highly magnesian limestone occur. Far to the west (in Jori), the rocks are less metamorphic; here are found clay-slates, very fine-grained dolomite, besides volcanic rocks, porphyrites etc., one of which has been analysed, showing a basic andesitic composition. These volcanics show a considerable likeness to rocks of the Kiruna-district of northern Sweden. The Jori-series may be younger than the hornblendeschists to the East.
