The Sundby aquifer, Verdal, Mid-Norway has been evaluated for yield and groundwater quality as a potential water resource for the local municipa- pality. Test-pumping of the aquifer commenced in 1989, after detailed geological investigation. The aquifer's potential yield satisfies the demand, but the observed increase in salinity as function of withdrawal poses a problem. The geological setting of the aquifer setting of the aquifer, the distance to the fjord and the ionic ratios observed in groundwater samples indicate that the salinity is not the result of intrusion of present fjord water, but is most likely due to the leaching of salts from relict connate water in the surrounding glaciomarine or marine sediments.
