An area within the archean Bamble formation, southern Norway, has been mapped. A description of the rock types occuring in the area is given. The Levang oligoclase granite in the southern part of the mapped area is surrounded by banded gneisses, with quartzites and zones rich in sillimanite. The gneiss has been reworked in the upper part of the migmatite zone. Its mineral facies is one of a lower temperature than the amphibolite facies, presumeably the epidote-amphibolite facies. The whole complex has much in common with the Swedish leptite formation. The more complicated geology of the northern part of the area has not been treated. The rocks of this part are only mentioned to give an idea of the geological surroundings of the Levang rocks.
