The writer follows Hedberg (1954) in stressing that one should distinguish between three categories of stratigraphic classification: litho-, bio-, and chronostratigraphic classification. Norwegian names are suggested for the terms accepted by Hedberg. The writer comments on established names for Norwegian stratigraphic units and recommends that names of litho- and chrono- stratigraphic units in the future be based on geographic names, without, however, rejecting all established names not of this type, as e.g. Ceratopyge limestone, which is defined as a limestone formation with certain characteristics, and which contains Ceratopyge at the type locality. The symbols in use for Cambro-Silurian sequence in the Oslo Region are suggested to be restricted to chrono-stratigraphic units.
