Norwegian rocks are with a few exeptions impervious. The water is concentrated in fractures, joints, fissures, solution openings etc. and hydrogeological study requires kowledge of the tectonics of the different formations and disticts, The yield of drilled wells and their depths show great local variations. Statistics give for most formations little information as to what yield may be expected in a new well and at what depth. Each place must be the subject of a special geological investigation. The fractures are often unconnected or only connected bu narrow fractures which control the yield of the well. Continuous pumping over a long period is necessary to get reliable information of the aquifer and the size of the water body stored in the fractures. Contamination of water occurs in Cambrian and Ordovician soft shales and in a fossiliferous Silurian limestone. About 60 wells drilled in the \"Cambro-Silurian districts\" at Mjøsa demonstrate the hydrogeology of these rocks.
