The present paper deals with the Devonian rocks of theKvamshesten district of western Norway. A strong E-W folding of thebasement in late-Silurian or early-Devonian was followed by crustaluplift through Lower Devonian. At the beginning of Middle Devonian theuplift resulted in block faulting and graben formation. The Devoniansequence consists of three formations: 1. The Markavatn Formation:Coarse polymict breccias and conglomerates are grading upwards intofiner conglomerates interbedded with sandstones. The sediments arepartly red, partly green. 2. The Heilefjell Formation: In theperipheral area alternating green and red siltstones and sandstones areinterbedded with thin conglomerate zones; in the central area there aremostly green siltstones. There is a lateral transition from theperipheral to the central area. 3. The Litjehesten Formation: In theeastern area red breccias, conglomerates, siltstones and sandstonesoccur, while the western area is dominated by green conglomerates andgreen sandstones. The different formations were deposited in the basinwith primary lateral thickness variations.
