Ice movements and the course of deglatiation in the Aurland area are reconstructed. The oldest ice movement was from the SE-ESE and converged towards Aurlandsfjorden, while the younger movements were influenced by the local topography and converged towards the larger valleys. Establishment of the deglaciation chronology has been based mainly on morphological studies of glacial deposits, equilibrium line displacements, pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating. Four events with glacial advances or stagnations have been identified. The Aurlandsfjord event is assumed to represent a short stagnation of the glaciers at the end of Younger Dryas (after the Ra advance), the Vangen event is older than 9790\u00B1160 B.P., and probably younger than 10 000 B.P., the Loven event is dated to the period immediately before 9790\u00B1160 B.P., and the Steine event dates from the transition Preboreal\/Boreal (9500 B.P.) or the earliest part of the Boreal period. The entire area was deglaciated around 8500 years ago.
