dc.description.abstract | The Storvann Group is a sequence of metasedimentary rocks which constitutes the autochtohonous Cambrian (?) sedimentary cover of the Precambrian Lofoten terrane on east Hinnøy, North Norway. The Storvann Group is composed of impure quartzite overlain by progressively more aluminous quartz-rich schists, with subordinate calcite marbles, comprising a transgressive sequence. The general stratigraphic similarity of the Storvann Group to autochthonous, unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the Scandinavian platform supports a recent hypothesis that the Lofoten terrane was part of the Baltoscandian continental block prior to Caledonian orogenesis. The composition of the Storvann Group suggests a platformal or miogeoclinal environment of deposition. However, without some means of determining the original thickness and stratigraphic continuity of this sequence, the position it represents relative to the pre-Caledonian Baltoscandian continental edge remains unknown. | |
