dc.description.abstract | Forkortet: In the map a distinction has been made between the old Archaean which consists chiefly of granite and gneiss and the Telemark formation (Algonkian) which is colored yellow with red lines. White quartzite and sometimes a quartzite conglomerate, interstratified with hornblende schists are the dominant rocks in the latter formation. The Gausdal district lies in the north-eastern corner of the map. Underneath shales containing Olenellus, the so-called quartz-sand- stone; under it lies the Sparagmite formation (sparagmite is a feldspar- bearing sandstone) which is divided into four subdivisions viz. beginning with the uppermost. a) The light sparagmite with conglomerate. b) The Biri limestone. c) The Biri conglomerate. d) The dark sparagmite and dark schist. It is a remarkable fact in the geology of south-eastern Norway that the fossiliferous Cambro-Silurian strata at Oslo and about the lake Mjøsa lie directly on the Archaean, while farther north a great series of rather coarse fragmentary rocks intervenes between the fossiliferous Cambrian and the Archa- ean. | |
