This work commences with a preface indicating the development in the modern tendency of soil research in Norway by studies of soil profiles and by investigations regarding the influence of the climatic factors upon the soil. To assist in this task, the Royal Norwegian Agricultural Society, in 1908, appointed a Soil Committee with the present author as chairman. The Committe was dissolved in 1921 and its work was transferred to the State Soil Research Board associated with the Geological Institute of the Agricultural College of Norway with the author as director until 1930 when, on attaining the age of 70, he retired in accordance with the regulations. Section I (page 10) is an introduction with a brief historical survey of the development of soil research and with a review of the work done and the results hitherto attained. The following points are mentioned inter alia: 1. Plan of the classification of soil types. 2. Description of Norwegian soil types and species. 3. Soil profile investigations. 4. The influence of the climate upon the soil. 5. Various soil provinces. 6. Investigations of the physical and chemical properties of Norwegian soil types. 7. Acidity determination of Norwegian soil types and soil profiles. 8. Lime tests and degree of acidity of the soil. 9. Cultivation and colonization. 10. Mapping of soil.
