Forkortet: The first section deals with the previous literature on the subject. The geology of the region of the high mountains and the fjords. This region comprises the whole area represented on our map with exception of the islands on the coast. Archaean: Granite and gneiss are designated by a light red colour, and gabbro and kindered rocks by dark brown. The granite has often a parallel structure. A dark yellow colour is seen at some spots in the northeastern part of the map. An attempt is thereby made to separate out of the Archa- ean the \"Telemarkformation\" (Algonkian) consisting of very fine-grained gneiss, quartzite, mica-schists and some distinctly clastic rock, as for instance conglomerate. The gabbro in one place to the south-east of Kvinn- herad church has a globular texture. The dark spots within the gabbro colour designate serpentine. In the middle of the northern part of the map at the Akrefjord is seen a very dark red colour; it stands for porphyrite. Cambro-Silurian. The green indicates argillaceous schists, which just outside of our map has been found to contain Dictygraptus flabelliformis. In the north- eastern corner of the map some quartzite (blåkvarts) is designated by a special tint.
